Ten times in 2018, artists (or artist couples) will be selected to work in Gettysburg National Military Park for a one month term. The Poet in the Parks Artist-in-Residence will be granted lodging, and a venue for at least one workshop, lecture or concert and the possibility of an arts donation at the park and during or after your stay at least two more poetry presentations in two major metropolitan cities (most likely Washington DC and Chicago ).
Respective of programmatic themes, all poet/artists world-wide are encouraged to apply, as the Gettysburg National Military Park Poetry in Parks Artist-in-Residence program is designed for all poets/artists to pursue their particular art form while surrounded by the inspiring landscape and history of Gettysburg National Military Park. The prospective candidate must present a cohesive body of work, a complete application including their resume, biography and proposal of their residency project and how it reflects and may be inspired park resources.

Poetry in Parks (PIP) under LiterAudiArts (LAA) theme (September-October 2017): This is one our most fascinating AiR programmatic themes. This category focuses on many and all POETRY Linguistic, words, sounds, song anything poetry. We are partnering with the world known POETRY FOUNDATION, creating this program. THE FIRST of it's kind in the National Parks.. The list is endless but must be, at least in part words or/and sound.... all and any poetry. AiRs run consecutively, starting the 15th of each month, (or after a weekend or federal holiday closest to the 15th) and end on the 12th of the next month (or before a weekend or federal holiday closest to the 12th).
Our other programmatic themes throughout the year :
U.S. Military Veteran AiRs (MVA) : You must be a U.S. Military Veteran to apply for these specific AiR programs (beginning in Jan., Jul. & Nov. 2017). The art media can be anything from music to photography, anything in between, basically ANY artistic media.
Arts Revolver (ARV) : The months of these AiRs is open to any and all artistic media including cross-overs with any of the other programmatic themes represented in the other months of Gettysburg Artist Residencies.
Alembic Arts (New Media) (AAM) : This programmatic theme speaks to many varied and mixed media including film image, technologies, augmented Realities, Virtual Realities and any and all combinations with these in themselves of combining classic art media with such "new media".
LiterAudiArts (LAA) : This is one our most fascinating AiR programmatic themes. This category focuses on many and all Linguistic, words, sounds, song and music. A few examples of this are POETRY ( We are partnering with the world known POETRY FOUNDATION), screen-plays, spoken word, environmental recordings, wall of sound experimentation, Gettysburg and heritage archive appropriation and period piece instruments. The list is endless but must be, at least in part words or/and sound.AiRs run consecutively, starting the 15th of each month, (or after a weekend or federal holiday closest to the 15th) and end on the 12th of the next month (or before a weekend or federal holiday closest to the 12th).
* All applicants MUST indicate which AiR for which they are applying.
Artists will be expected to have a continuous public and visitor presence throughout their residency. Further, the artist will present, at minimum, one 1-hour public program, workshop, concert or lecture during their residency at Gettysburg National Military Park during their stay. This can be presented either the park or another venue as deemed by NPAF and NPS. Poet/Artists must provide their own transportation, supplies and equipment for these presentations. We also encourage poet/artists to give more public presentations at the park and in their own community about their residency experience in Gettysburg National Military Park, to further broaden the reach of the program’s purpose and the goals of perpetuating poetry and it's importance.
There will be a venue for participation in Gettysburg's "First Friday"
events, through an artist's presentation at the David Wills House. NOTE THAT THIS VENUE IS ONLY AVAILABLE APRIL THROUGH OCTOBER. Other
presentations or activities will may be scheduled by arrangement with
NPS. The artist will usually present at least one workshop, lecture or
concert and the possibility of an arts donation for the NPS National
Museum Collection. This can be presented either the park or another
venue as deemed appropriate by NPAF and NPS. ALL EVENTS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE AND/OR CANCELLATION.
Artists need to provide all of their own insurance for liability, health, covering, but not limited to art supplies, equipment, personal items, reliable transportation and any insurances governing commercial permitting for required park permits. NPAF nor NPS will provide any insurance for any part of the Artist-in-Residence program. Artists should be self-sufficient, independent and enjoy working in a public, culturally sacred environment and able to commit to the full Artist-in-Residence (AiR) term. The AiR artist must remain accommodating to inquiring park visitors because of the thoroughfare of their location and/or workspace. The artist is expected to comply with all park regulations and policies governing park employees, volunteers and visitors.
The participating artists will donate an original piece of work inspired by their residency in Gettysburg National Military Park to the NPS at the park, through the NPAF. Donated work must be received no later than a year after the artist’s residency. Artists are required to provide copyright of donated artwork to NPAF.
This opportunity is open to people from all countries. All prospective candidates from outside of the United States must ensure their own proper documentation as it pertains to this opportunity within and to the United States. NPAF will do what we can to assist you with this as we have included many international artists.
The artist-in-residence program may be canceled or interrupted due to a government shutdown, for unforeseen circumstances or during any hazardous weather conditions including, but not limited to, poor environmental levels, fire danger, etc. The balance of the residency term may be negotiated to be made up at a later date, but NPAF cannot guarantee or be held responsible for AiR interruptions or cancellations because of Government decisions, inaction or natural causes.
All terms herein may change, without notice, and are subject on the approval of the NPS, NPAF and other governing entities. Only the selected artists will be notified of resulting selected poets. The entire program may be delayed, changed or cancelled, to which NPAF, NPS and any affiliates will NOT be held accountable or responsible. No refunds will be issued. Only select applicants will be notified of their acceptance and standing with the AiR program for which they applied.All AiR participants may be required to accept further conditions contracts and agreements including but not limited to; back-ground checks, codes of conduct, special use permits, J-1 visas,rules and regulations, housing agreements, volunteer-in-the-park (VIP) artist contract and any other apparent and unforeseen agreements required of any governing entity, namely the National Park Service, NPAF and/or NPS concessionaires. All funding is subject to U.S and international laws.
